Around 50 family and friends witnessed the last public display of honor for Carter when the motorcade arrived around 5 p.m. at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. They stood at the front of the vehicle procession as 21 F-18s with the U.S. Navy flew over.

Held at the Washington National Cathedral, the service included the hymns “Come Thou Almighty King,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Be Still My Soul.” The choir also sang “Eternal Father, Strong to Save, ” also known as the “The Navy Hymn,” in honor of Carter’s service in the Navy.

As the 39th president is eulogized at Washington National Cathedral, Biden tells mourners his long-ago predecessor “taught me ... the strength of character.”

Following the honors in Washington, it was his wish to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter. After Carter's family disembarked the plane, his casket was carried from the plane and transferred to the hearse.
