Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency Wednesday in a rural county of her state due to a surge in violent crime and drug trafficking.

The governor of New Mexico has declared a state of emergency in response to violent crime and drug trafficking across a swath of northern New Mexico, including two Native American pueblo communities.

The state of emergency was declared in Rio Arriba County, in response to a surge in drug trafficking, violent crime and public safety threats that have overwhelmed local resources.
