The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says it responded to nearly 1,200 collisions statewide on Wednesday. Virginia State Police reported early Thursday that there had been nearly 500 crashes statewide.

With Wednesday’s winter storm, the Triangle got its third snow day of 2025. While some parts of central North Carolina got soft snow, others got sleet and freezing rain. In many places, the winter precipitation eventually turned to slush and ice later in the night.

Storm Kingston swept across the U.S. from the Midwest into the South and mid-Atlantic, bringing snow, ice and dangerous road conditions to cities including Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kansas City and Roanoke, Virginia.

Re-freezing could also result in black ice and slick travel conditions. Significant ice accumulations were forecast in eastern North Carolina, the National Weather Service said.

The Kinston National Guard has been preparing to help in any way needed. According to Sergeant First Class Steven Parsons, soldiers started preparations Tuesday ahead of today’s storm and already have soldiers on the ground.

Snowy roads led to hundreds of crashes throughout Virginia and North Carolina, including a series of crashes on an interstate highway involving more than 50 vehicles

The last in a long train of storms will bring snow and ice to the Mid-Atlantic and Carolinas on Wednesday. While Washington will be near the northern edge of the storm starting late in the morning — with a dusting to a half-inch of snow possible in the District and areas to the south by the evening — impacts will be moderate to major farther south.

Snow and ice expected across central and eastern parts of the state through Wednesday into Thursday. Stay off the roads if you can.
