As OpenAI pours hundreds of billions of dollars into data centers and chips to cement its dominance in artificial intelligence, rival Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon ( NASDAQ: AMZN) and Google ( NASDAQ: GOOG) ( NASDAQ: GOOGL ), is quietly emerging as the stronger business contender, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

Anthropic is expanding its deal with Google to use as many as one million of the tech giant's artificial intelligence chips, worth tens of billions of dollars, as the startup races to advance its AI systems in the competitive market.
