Jesús Montero, a Venezuelan who once played for the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, has died following a traffic accident in his country two weeks ago, officials said Sunday.

Jesus Montero, who was a highly-touted prospect for the New York Yankees who played one season for the franchise before four more with the Seattle Mariners, died at the age of 35.

Montero was involved in a memorable altercation in 2014 with a coach who sent him an ice cream sandwich while he was playing for the Single-A Everett AquaSox.
