The MCU isn't done with the Multiverse just yet. After Kevin Feige announced Robert Downey Jr. would star as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday at San Diego Comic Con, it looked like we'd see another OG Avenger in the movie: Chris Evans.

Chris Evans seemingly contradicted reports that he would return as Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, in the next 'Avengers' movie, saying about the casting rumors, 'That’s not true, though. This always happens.

Doomsday? Well… according to Captain America himself he isn't. Though The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in December that Evans would be dipping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor is now denying those reports.

In Anthony Mackie’s new cover story for Esquire, Chris Evans revealed he told his Marvel co-star that he was the next Captain America in the MCU. “I inadvertently was the one who got to tell him that he was going to be Captain America. I didn’t know that he didn’t know,” Evans, 43, said in the story published Thursday.

Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans spent five years making Marvel movies together as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Steve Rogers/Captain America. Their characters were close friends, with Steve bestowing the Captain America shield to Sam at the end of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.

Evans returned to the MCU briefly in Deadpool and Wolverine, but as Johnny Storm, AKA the Human Torch. He hasn't played Captain America since giving up his shield in 2019's Avengers: Endgame. Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson took over, embracing the mantle in 2021's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
