Legendary actor Robert De Niro took a strong stance against Donald Trump during the Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony. As he accepted the festival’s honorary Palme d’Or, De Niro called Trump a “philistine president” and labeled him an enemy of the arts.

Robert De Niro is bestowed with a honorary Palme d'Or for Lifetime Achievement, and Leonardo DiCaprio presents it to him. DiCaprio and De Niro first starred together in the 1993 film This Boy's Life and were reunited in Killers of the Flower Moon, which screened in the official selection at Cannes 2023.

The other eight jurors include Halle Berry and Jeremy Strong, who was unable to attend Cannes last year for the premiere of his Trump film The Apprentice. He referenced that film, which led to his first Oscar nomination, in his comments about the US president on Tuesday.
