The Edmonton Oilers got a big win over the Chicago Blackhawks by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night at Rogers Place. Evan Bouchard got the game-winner at the 2:43 mark of the extra frame.
Through the first seven games of this NHL season, the Edmonton Oilers averaged 1.55 goals per 60 during five-on-five play. After seven games in 2024-25, Edmonton’s five-on-five goals per 60 of 1.57 was also near the bottom of the league. The club recovered from there; in the final 75 games, it posted 2.56 goals per 60.
As for individuals, Pierre-Olivier Joseph had a strong night from an analytics perspective. Evan Bouchard, who’s had a rough go of things lately, was the three-on-three hero, scoring at 2:43 to give Edmonton its second win in the last five games (or fourth in the last 10, depending on how far back you want to trace the inconsistency).
The Oilers have used 27 different trios to begin their 10 games, a jaw-dropping total without even considering how often they’ve altered lines within specific contests as well. The start of the season was always going to be about exploration, but Knoblauch has taken that idea to the extreme.
