OSWIECIM, Poland — The 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops is being marked on Monday at the site of the former death camp, a ceremony that is widely being treated as the last major observance that any notable number of survivors will be able to attend.

Nazi German forces murdered some 1.1 million people at the site in southern Poland, which was under German occupation during World War II.

The London mayor, speaking on Monday during a visit to Poland to attend the 80th anniversary commemoration of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp , said he was “angry and distressed” at the “heightened fear” experienced by Jewish Londoners since the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel in 2023.

The first ceremony took place in the courtyard of Block 11 at Auschwitz, where survivors laid wreaths and lit candles.
