WASHINGTON (AP) — There were funnel cakes, stands of festival bling and American flags aplenty. There were mighty machines of war, brought out to dazzle and impress. And there was the spray of tear gas against demonstrators in Los Angeles and Atlanta, and rolling waves of anti-Trump resistance coast to coast.
Protests over immigration raids have broken out in several other cities, including Chicago, New York, San Antonio and Spokane, Washington.
In 1970, four students were killed when National Guard troops opened fire on anti-war protestors at Kent State University.
HOW WE GOT HERE: The protests erupted after Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Friday carried out raids in three locations across L.A., where dozens of people were taken into custody. Newsom called the raids “chaotic federal sweeps” that aimed to fill an “arbitrary arrest quota.”
The "No Kings" protest, organized by Ohio 50501, drew hundreds of people to the Ohio Statehouse denouncing the Trump administration.
