A massive power outage is impacting Spain and Portugal, knocking out key services and forcing the evacuation of subway systems in both countries, reports say.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A major power outage hit Spain and Portugal on Monday, including their capitals, knocking out subway networks, phone lines, traffic lights and ATM machines. It is rare to have such a widespread outage there. Spanish generator Red Eléctrica said it affected the Iberian peninsula and the incident is being assessed.

A massive power outage appears to be affecting large portions of Spain and Portugal Monday. Red Electrica, the operator of Spain's power grid, said early Monday morning it had begun its plan to restore electricity and that the cause of the outage was being analyzed.
