Arenal is one of Costa Rica’s youngest and most active volcanoes. For centuries, Arenal volcano was a calm, nearly dormant volcano. Then suddenly, on July 28th, 1968 at approximately 7:30am, she erupted with violence and fury. The explosion took several lives and covered the region in rock, lava, and ash. It would remain active (although not as intensely as the initial burst) all the way until 2010. Since 2010, the volcano has been much calmer. It doesn’t spew large amounts of volcanic material
