Rhodes has a long history, from ancient Minoan and Mycenaean settlers to its classical and Hellenistic Golden Age as a powerful maritime and cultural center known for the Colossus of Rhodes. Following conquest by the Romans and Byzantines, the island was conquered by the Knights of St. John in 1309, who fortified the capital city.
