Easy (?) Allosaurus species ID #Allosaurus has two recognized (by me) North American species. Your species mileage may vary :-). A. fragilis, “the classic,” YPM 1930, named by Marsh in 1877 from his usual scraps of bone. USNM 4734 is the neotype. I dub the original a #paucitype because it was named from a paucity of material. That situation took 13 years to resolve, from 2010-2023. Anyone know why so long? YPM 1930 was too generic, as is YPM 1920 for Diplodocus, but that is for another day. A. j
